bmp save file size issue
debab: version 6.1.4
macBook pro running: 10.5.8 here's the problem: I'm converting 24bit bmp (250x 30px 80KB) to an 8 bit bmp (save as) using a reduced palette in debab now on 90% of cases I will end up with an 8KB file... which is fine. BUT sometimes the files saved end up being much bigger (60KB) file size is a big issue for me. Doing a preferences: "set factory defaults prefs" seems to fix this; the problem is that I loose all my personal saved palettes in list! so not really practical. Any idea of what the problem could be? not sure if that could help but I have noticed when the problem occurs the save as dialogue box seems always to default to the png format. thank you in advance for your help Patrick |

Thanks for the nicely-detailed report.
This is likely a side effect of running Pro 6 on an OS for which it was not designed. The Pro 6 version is expected to run properly on the 10.4 series of Mac. You seem to have come up with the most efficient workaround. Other than exporting your palettes every once in a while, you've probably got the best alternative to running the program on the OS for which it was designed. Sorry we don't have better news for you.

Thank you for coming back to me...
Could you tell me if there is a way of accessing the palettes in the palette list (i.e. a folder somewhere on my hardDisk)? I have done a search for such a folder but haven't managed to find one. The idea would be to back up that folder prior to a factory reset. thank you in advance, Patrick |

That was the intent of the "exporting your palettes" statement in the last post. Among other things, palettes are stored in the preferences of the Mac version. The mechanisms for saving and restoring them are the 'Export...' and 'Import...' functions found under the File>Resources sub-menu. So, before resetting the Preferences, you would Export your palettes to a safe location on your hard drive, and then Import them back in afterward. You'll find more detail on these functions in the DB Pro 6 OSX User Guide PDF that comes with a full installation of the program.
